In the aftermath of the recent Ibadan explosion, Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that approximately 230 structures in the Oyo State capital underwent thorough structural integrity assessments.

The primary objective of these tests was to evaluate the condition of the properties affected by the explosion. Makinde, revealing this information in a Sunday statement, mentioned that over 90% of blast victims have received treatment and are now safely back home.

The governor also revised the death toll, indicating that it now stands at five, contrary to the earlier report of three casualties. Moreover, he emphasized that the focus at Ground Zero has shifted from search and rescue to recovery operations.

Expressing gratitude, Makinde acknowledged the Nigerian Society of Engineers for conducting structural tests on properties within different radii of the blast site. This included 13 houses within 50 meters, 40 houses at 100 meters, 122 houses at 200 meters, and 53 houses within a 250-meter radius.

“Yesterday, the medical team at the Emergency Operations Centre and the Honourable Commissioner for Health visited two hospitals where victims were treated. Over 90% of the victims have been discharged. The current death toll from the incident is five persons,” stated the governor.

Addressing the incident’s cause, Makinde informed that security agencies are actively investigating, and a public update on their findings will follow soon.

“The security agencies are still probing the incident, and a comprehensive update will be released. Our commitment remains steadfast in supporting all victims and ensuring accountability for those responsible,” he added.

Background Check: Explosive Incident in Bodija, Ibadan

Last week, an explosion rattled the Bodija area in Ibadan, Oyo State, sparking concerns of substantial casualties. The blast on Tuesday, January 16, around 7:30 pm resulted in property damage.

Governor Seyi Makinde later confirmed three lives lost, with 77 individuals receiving treatment across public and private hospitals. The investigation pointed to illegal mining activities in Ibadan as the cause, although no specific culprits were named.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the reasons behind the explosion, underscoring the commitment to transparency and accountability.
