CAC in Nigeria typically stands for Corporate Affairs Commission. The Corporate Affairs Commission is the governmental body responsible for regulating the formation and management of companies in Nigeria. It plays a role in overseeing business registration, ensuring compliance with laws, and maintaining a database of registered companies.

When someone decides to establish a company in Nigeria, they are required to go through the registration process with the Corporate Affairs Commission. This process involves providing necessary documentation and paying the required fees. The CAC issues certificates of incorporation upon successful registration, officially recognising the legal existence of the company.

When you register your business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), it becomes a separate legal entity. This means that the business is seen as separate and independent from the people who run it. So, even though people control the business, legally, the business stands on its own.

Registering a Business Name with CAC

  • Create an account with CAC using your mobile number or NIN (National Identification Number).

  • Go to the CAC reserve name page to see if your chosen business name is available for registration.

  • Complete the pre-registration form, called CAC-BNo1, and upload the necessary documents using the Company Registration Portal online.

  • Pay the required filing fee online. You can find the fees on the CAC website to know how much to pay.

  • After paying the fees, wait for CAC to review your documents. Once approved, they will let you know, and your business name certificate will be ready for collection.

How to Register a Business Name with CAC

Requirements for CAC Business Name Registration

  1. Name of Company (2 options): Provide two options for your company name, make sure they align with your business vision and are available for registration.

  2. Share Capital: Specify the share capital for your business, indicating the amount of money that each shareholder contributes to the company.

  3. Company Address: State the official address of your company, which is where official communications will be sent.

  4. Residential Address: Provide the residential address of the company’s directors, giving a location where they can be reached personally.

  5. Nature of Business: Clearly describe the nature of your business activities to help classify and register your company appropriately.

  6. ID Card of Directors: Submit identification cards (e.g., National ID) for the directors of the company as part of the registration requirements.

  7. Passport Photograph: Include passport-sized photographs of the directors to authenticate the registration process.

  8. Phone Number: Provide a valid phone number for communication during the registration process and for future correspondence.

Summarily, registering a business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) goes beyond the legal formalities; it helps build brand image, credibility, instilling trust in customers, partners, and investors. Customers feel safer dealing with a business that’s officially registered because it shows professionalism and commitment. Being registered means the business can be easily checked and is held to certain standards. Also, investors tend to favor registered businesses due to their perceived stability, transparency, and accountability. Registering your business with CAC safeguards your business name, preventing others from using the same or a similar name within your industry.
