On January 12, 2024, the Dangote Refinery, recognized as the world’s largest single-train refinery, initiated production. Operating round the clock, the refinery received a significant six million barrels of crude oil supply this week, supplementing previous batches.

Aliko Dangote’s oil refinery, despite facing delays, received its inaugural crude deliveries late last year, moving closer to realizing the ambitious megaproject. The initial phase of production will prioritize diesel and aviation fuel, followed by subsequent petrol production.

Key Insights:

  • Despite being one of Africa’s largest oil producers and the leading economy on the continent, Nigeria heavily relies on imported fuel and diesel due to inadequate refining capacity.
  • Nigeria has faced substantial foreign exchange challenges due to the heavy burden of fuel imports and subsidies amid declining oil revenues and shortages in foreign currency.
  • The Dangote Petroleum Refinery aims to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet. The refinery also anticipates having surpluses of each product for export.
  • Originally scheduled to open in 2021, the refinery was officially inaugurated by then-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
  • Since taking office in May, President Bola Tinubu has implemented economic reforms, discontinuing the longstanding fuel subsidy and floating the naira currency. These measures aim to attract foreign investment and foster long-term growth.
  • Concurrently with the Dangote refinery, the Port Harcourt refinery is expected to commence production, signaling a positive shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
