Celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has introduced a new dimension to her literary journey with the release of her debut children’s book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf.” The event, titled “Christmas Magic with Chimamanda,” featured notable personalities like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, emphasizing the profound impact of storytelling on nurturing children’s imagination.
“Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” narrates the enchanting story of young Chino, who discovers her family’s culture and values through playful interactions with her mother’s vibrant scarf. Published by Harper Collins in the UK and US in September 2023 and later in Nigeria by Narrative Landscape Press in October 2023, this marks Adichie’s entry into children’s literature and a triumphant return to book launches in Nigeria, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Renowned for works like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Americanah,” Adichie aimed to create a book reflecting her childhood essence and celebrating the special bond between mother and child. In an effort to revive Nigeria’s reading culture, she emphasized the critical role of reading in fostering critical thinking, encouraging parents to instill a reading culture at home.
Former President Obasanjo highlighted the importance of seeking wisdom through reading, while Vice President Osinbajo praised Adichie’s ability to captivate young minds. Figures like Ms. Bella Disu, Mr. Hakeem Belo-Osagie, and Ms. Munachi Mbonu shared insights on the transformative impact of reading.
