Nigeria’s Riverside LNG, an energy company, is in discussions about a potential agreement to supply gas to South Africa starting from the first quarter of 2024. This prospective deal marks the first of its kind between the two nations, signaling potential collaboration in the energy sector.
Earlier this year, Riverside LNG entered into a gas-export partnership agreement with Johannes Schuetze Energy Import AG of Germany. CEO David Ige, in an Abuja interview, disclosed the company’s ongoing efforts to secure new deals on the continent.
Nigeria, with the largest gas reserves in Africa, is positioning itself to tap into the evolving gas market in the region, covering southern Africa, western Africa, northwest Europe, the Caribbean, and South America.
David Ige mentioned that discussions with South African counterparts are progressing, aiming to finalize another segment of the market early in the year. However, specific details about the talks remain confidential due to confidentiality clauses. Additionally, Riverside LNG is actively exploring potential opportunities in Liberia and Cameroon.
Key Points to Note:
- South Africa’s Power Challenges: South Africa faces persistent power shortages as ageing and inadequately maintained power stations managed by the financially troubled state utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. struggle to meet increasing demand.
- Shift to Renewable Sources: South Africa, heavily dependent on coal for 80% of its electricity production, is transitioning towards renewable sources. The goal is to achieve 60 gigawatts of power from renewables by 2030.
- Natural Gas Infrastructure Plan: The Southern African Development Community, comprising 16 members, has endorsed a $17 billion plan for natural gas infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance energy provisions in the region by approving investments in pipelines and terminals for both local and imported supplies.
- Nigeria as a Trading Hub: Riverside LNG sees a significant opportunity for Nigeria to become a trading hub, especially as many countries in the region express interest in transitioning to natural gas.
Riverside LNG’s potential gas supply to South Africa comes at a time when there is a growing need for diversified and reliable energy sources to address power challenges and support economic development in the region.
