A recent study by Coursera, a U.S.-based training and skills company, sheds light on Nigeria’s remarkable position as the third-highest global enrollee for professional certificate courses. The region has witnessed an outstanding 80% average enrollment growth over the past few years.

This Coursera report reveals that Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has enrolled an impressive 142,000 learners. While the United States leads with 1.3 million and India follows with 654,000 enrolments, Nigeria holds the third position. Notably, Africans are keenly interested in technology skills such as web development, user experience, and data science, including geo-visualization and data visualization software.

Beyond Nigeria, other countries in the region showcase substantial growth in enrolment figures. Cameroon leads in technology courses, while Zambia takes the lead in data science skills.

The study highlights that Sub-Saharan Africa boasts the highest average growth in enrolment for professional courses, indicating a rising enthusiasm for professional development and upskilling. Nigerians, in particular, demonstrate a “competitive” score of 51% in entrepreneurship courses but show room for improvement in strategy and operations (13%), finance (22%), and leadership and management (25%).

South Africans, on the other hand, stand out with “competitive scores in business skills across the board,” with notable interest in audit, investment management, innovation, and risk management. Their preference for technology skills like network architecture and computer programming is also evident.

The report suggests that Sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to become the next digital skills learning hub. It emphasizes the need for regional leaders to prioritize investments in technology and data science skills. These high enrolment figures underscore a growing interest in personal growth and career advancement, signalling a positive shift towards regional skill development.
