Three years after its establishment by the Ekiti State Government, Ikun Dairy Farm Limited (IDFL), in collaboration with Fountain Holdings Limited and Promasidor Nigeria Limited (PNL), reports a significant transformation in the state’s dairy sector. Functioning as a vital source of local raw materials for milk production, the farm exemplifies the viability of commercial dairy farming with government backing and private sector involvement.
With a focus on maximizing the farm’s potential, a dedicated team of over 200 employees, mainly from the local community, led by an experienced dairy farmer/general manager, ensures the farm’s smooth operation. The commitment to establishing the farm as a world-class dairy facility is becoming a reality through meticulous animal care, regular vaccinations, and well-maintained facilities.
Currently housing over 500 exotic animals, the farm has initiated daily production of fresh milk, essential for both calf nutrition and off-take by PNL. The strategic use of insemination guarantees a minimum of 90 percent heifer births, crucial for sustainable milk production and herd growth.
In a move towards self-sufficiency, the farm has undertaken a feed project, cultivating over 400 hectares of maize crops, soya beans, and Rhodes grass to secure animal feed. This not only ensures feed security but also strengthens the farm’s business case by reducing dependence on purchased feed.
