Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is reportedly seeking to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group to enhance its influence on the world economic stage. Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed the country’s intention to join the BRICS group within the next two years. Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to make independent decisions about its partnerships and alliances.
“We need to belong to groups like BRICS, like the G-20 and all these other ones because if there’s a certain criterion, say the largest countries in terms of population and economy should belong, then why isn’t Nigeria part of it?” the minister stated.
The BRICS group aims to reshape the global economic structure and increase its collective economic influence. Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has recently expanded by adding new members, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates. Nigeria seeks to join this group to strengthen its global standing.
Nigeria’s interest in BRICS marks a potential shift from its historical ties with the West. While there is some contention about whether Nigeria has formally applied for BRICS membership in the past, the country’s current push to join aligns with its goal of becoming a key player in the evolving global economic landscape.
