On November 27, the Port Terminal Multipurpose Limited (PTML) in Lagos is poised to create history by hosting the largest Container-RORO (CONRO) ship ever to grace the West African sub-region.

PTML, serving as Nigeria’s and West Africa’s premier multipurpose roll-on-roll-off (RORO) terminal, will welcome the MV GREAT LAGOS, an ultramodern mega Container-RORO ship owned by the Grimaldi Group. Launched in April this year, this marvel of modern engineering and environmental consciousness spans an impressive 250 meters long, with a beam of 38 meters and a deadweight exceeding 45,000 tonnes.

The vessel boasts a remarkable capacity to transport 4.7 kilometers of rolling freight, accommodating 2,500 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs) and 2,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). As the second of the G5-class ships recently introduced by the Grimaldi Group, it proudly bears the name of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, a city it has faithfully served for many decades.

PTML’s Managing Director, Mr. Ascanio Russo, emphasized the ship’s arrival as a groundbreaking moment in the shipping industry. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in facilitating the reception of the vessel.

According to Russo, the arrival of the GREAT LAGOS is more than a routine port call; it serves as a testament to PTML’s state-of-the-art facilities and its preparedness to handle the new generation of mega-vessels. This event underscores the port’s capability to manage vessels of such magnitude and solidifies Nigeria’s position as a key player in the global shipping industry.

PTML has invested over USD20 million to accommodate the GREAT LAGOS to enhance Berth 11. This investment includes the extension of berths, the expansion of storage areas, and the acquisition of cutting-edge cargo handling equipment. This strategic move further establishes PTML as a hub for maritime excellence and reinforces Nigeria’s prominence in the ever-evolving landscape of international shipping.
