The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has disclosed that the $2.8 billion Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project, undertaken by Oilserve Limited, will be commissioned in December 2023. This announcement was made by Oritsemiyiwa Eyesan, the Executive Vice President, Upstream, NNPC Limited, during the ongoing 41st Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) 2023 expo in Lagos.

This commitment aligns with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan, according to Eyesan, demonstrating NNPC’s dedication to driving investments into the oil and gas sector. The AKK gas pipeline project is a significant venture set to enhance the country’s energy infrastructure.

Project Background

The AKK gas pipeline project, inaugurated in June 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari, is a $2.8 billion initiative spanning 614 kilometers. As the largest gas pipeline project in Nigeria’s history, it aims to transport 3,500 million metric standard cubic feet per day of dehydrated gas from southern Nigeria to central Nigeria. The project operates on a build-and-transfer Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis and is a crucial component of the Trans-Nigeria Gas Pipeline (TNGP) project.

Strategic Importance

The AKK pipeline serves as a strategic link between the southern and northern regions of Nigeria, with future plans to extend it to North Africa. The project is expected to contribute to the development of Nigeria’s gas sector, supporting economic growth and providing a reliable energy supply across different regions.

As Nigeria continues to position itself as a key player in the global energy landscape, the successful commissioning of the AKK gas project will mark a significant milestone in advancing the nation’s energy infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for natural gas.
