Before leaving office on May 29, 2023, President Major General Muhammadu (ret.) has been encouraged by the National Association of Polytechnic Students to work to eliminate the disparity between holders of the Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Science degrees, Entrepreneurng report.

“According to report, NAPS deputy Senate President Adeniji Temitope stated that it was no longer news that Nigerian polytechnic students and graduates “have been facing difficulties of dichotomy for the past years.”

“According to Adeniji, individuals involved in the polytechnic education field pleaded with the Ninth National Assembly to approve the “Bill for an Act to Abolish and Prohibit Dichotomy and Discrimination between First Degree and Higher National Diploma.”

On the Senate floor during plenary, the bill proposed by Senator Ayo Akinyelure was approved after the third reading.

All six of the revised sections were accepted by the Senate when Ahmad Kaita, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, delivered his report.

“Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano Central), the chairman of the Joint Committee, stated that “the enactment of the bill to abolish and prohibit discrimination between First Degrees and Higher National Diploma for the purpose of employment in Nigeria will no doubt free holders of HND from stagnation and ensure balanced treatment with their counterparts from other higher tertiary institutions in Nigeria.”

The Ninth National Assembly did a great job approving the Bill, but it still needed the President’s approval to become law, according to NAPS, which praised the achievement.

“In a statement, the Senate branch of NAPS claimed that if President Buhari didn’t sign the HND/BSc dichotomy bill within the next 14 days, “all polytechnics, colleges of technology, and allied institutions that award HND across Nigeria will be closed down.”

The student body alleged that although Buhari had been signing numerous measures, the HND/BSc dichotomy bill had not been included. They vowed to “occupy the Presidential Villa in Abuja and continue to cry until Buhari assents to the bill.”

The statement continues, “Polytechnic students and graduates are one of the major groups that supported and sustained the President’s regime.” “We shouldn’t be viewed as an outcast in our country,”

In conclusion, President Buhari should end the HND/BSc dichotomy now and make it one of his major achievements.
