The Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has urged the state government to fix the city’s poor roads and clean up the trash in Calabar, the state’s capital, Entrepreneurng report.

The request was made in a statement released on Friday after the union’s Congress, which took place on April 19, 2023, on Wednesday.

The Congress, which was presided over by the state chairman Nsa Gill, urged the state government to act quickly to address the terrible state of Calabar’s urban roads, specifically the 8 Miles axis of the Murtala Muhammed Highway and many other areas of the city, which are typically a nightmare for commuters during the rainy season.

The Congress also urged the state government to take immediate action to clear the key streets and markets in the state capital of the emerging mountains of trash.

Other resolutions on state-related issues include, “Congress called on all residents of the state to present themselves for counting during the exercise given the importance of the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census, as a veritable means of generating data for effective planning by the government at all levels.

“The state government should continue the current process of hiring into the state civil service to prevent a potential gap created by the impending retirement of the experienced workforce who would effectively transfer knowledge and experience to those anticipated to be hired into the service.”

Regarding the appointments of some union members to strategic positions in the state civil service, such as Head of Service and Permanent Secretaries, the union thanked the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, for determining that these union members were deserving of such appointments, and it gave the assurance that those chosen would be able to live up to the trust placed in them.
