Elon Musk’s SpaceX is getting ready to launch its own creation, which could have roughly twice the power of anything ever flown. This comes just a few months after NASA showed the world the most powerful rocket ever flown to orbit.
At SpaceX’s facilities on the southern Texas coast, the Starship vehicle is currently perched on a launch pad. Despite having the option to launch at any time between 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET) and 9:30 a.m. CT (10:30 a.m. ET), the company plans to launch on Monday at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET).
“I guess I’d like to just set expectations low,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said during a Twitter “Spaces” event for his subscribers Sunday evening. “If we get far enough away from launch pad before something goes wrong, then I think I would consider that to be a success. Just don’t blow up the pad.”
He added: “There’s a good chance that it gets postponed since we’re going to be pretty careful about this launch.”
Undoubtedly, locals in the area of SpaceX’s operations in South Texas will be able to see it firsthand. This launch is guaranteed to draw viewers because locals in South Padre Island are known for lining the nearby beaches to observe tests.
However, SpaceX has frequently advised locals to avoid the “Keepout Zone” – the areas immediately surrounding the launch site that have been determined to be too close to the rocket to be secure during takeoff.
The “Keepout Zone” extends a few miles inland and encompasses the shoreline south of South Padre Island.
After years of testing, this will be SpaceX’s first attempt to launch a fully assembled Starship vehicle.
For nearly a decade, Musk has talked about Starship and made detailed presentations regarding its design and function. He frequently emphasizes the possibility of using Starship to transport supplies and people to Mars.
Elon Musk has also said that the only reason he founded SpaceX was to create a Starship-like spaceship capable of establishing a human settlement on Mars.
Additionally, as part of the Artemis program, NASA has already given SpaceX contracts and options totaling several billion dollars to utilize Starship to transport government astronauts to the moon’s surface.
