Peter Yamai, the Kaduna Business Manager of Veritas Kapital Assurance Plc, has emphasized the need of encouraging young Nigerians to study insurance as a vehicle for national development, Entrepreneurng report.

Although, the significance of insurance for the development of the nation, in Yamai’s opinion, cannot be overstated.

Yamai made this statement while awarding Tonica Ehidiamen-Ton, a 22-year-old Ahmadu Bello University student, with an award for placing third in a quiz competition held by the insurance company for undergraduates enrolled in insurance-related courses at Nigerian universities.

Ehidiamen-Ton, a female student in the 400-level program at ABU’s School of Insurance and Actuarial Science, won an N100,000 cash prize.

Yamai emphasized the value of insurance to Nigeria and further emphasize in Kaduna on Wednesday that it was essential for organizations to strive toward the growth of the course in various institutions of higher learning.

Yamai added that several actuarial organizations have made it their mission to train young people for the nation’s socioeconomic progress.

“Therefore, the management deemed it wise to support our young ones in studying insurance. In Nigeria, we aim to encourage young people to study insurance as well.”

“As part of our company’s corporate social responsibility, we have a culture of giving back to the communities in which we operate.”

Nonetheless, the organization wrote to several universities, asking them to provide us with their top insurance students, which they did. They gave it their all and had the highest CGP across all the schools to take the quiz, which involved virtual contact.

Three top universities were selected after all the procedures. The University of Lagos won first place, followed by the University of Ado Ekiti for second place, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for third place.

The first-place prize money is N200,000, the second-place prize money is N150,000, and the third-place prize money is N100,000. It’s going to be an annual event and the prize money will surely increase as time goes on, he said.

An overjoyed Ehidiamen-Ton, who has a Cumulative Grade Point of 4.60, praised the firm for allowing her to showcase herself in her chosen field.

In conclusion, she said, I am an undergraduate student in the Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, and I am from Edo State. My initial application was for accounting, but I received insurance instead. Even though I wasn’t enthusiastic about it at first, it ended up being a wonderful course. Every day I give thanks to God for enrolling in the insurance course.
