Kogi’s governor, Yahaya Bello, has threatened to detain and prosecute anyone who refuses to accept the old Naira note, Entrepreneurng report.
The old Naira notes of N1000, N500, and N200 should continue to be accepted as lawful money alongside the new notes in all transactions until December 2023, the supreme court had earlier declared on Wednesday.
However, the governor described this act as “wrong” and “demeaning” the ongoing rejection of the old Naira notes despite the supreme court verdict.
“Despite the court ruling confirming their use, certain people and companies will still refuse to accept the old naira notes, and this administration will not stand by and watch.”
In essence, in our opinion, rejecting the old naira notes would be a flagrant violation of the Supreme Court’s decision and would be vigorously resisted.
“Anybody who refuses to accept the outdated naira notes should be reported to the security and government officials for instant arrest and prosecution.”
Nevertheless, the state government won’t allow financial institutions that intentionally ignore court rulings, especially the orders of Nigeria’s top court, Bello warned. Banks that refuse to take old naira deposits would also be closed down.
The governor urged all Kogi people to try to accept the outdated notes for regular business transactions now that commercial banks had begun issuing them.
Kogi residents must receive it as well because they owe it to their country since they cannot keep destroying their economy even after the Supreme Court has granted them freedom.
As a result, the state government has established a powerful Committee to ensure complete adherence and conformity to the Supreme Court’s decision over the usage of the old notes, according to Bello.
The state commissioner for finance, budget, and economic planning, as well as the commissioner for information and communications, are among the members of the group, according to him.

The governor, however, commended Nigerians on the landmark decision of the Supreme Court, which is Nigeria’s top court.
In conclusion, he outlined the rationale behind why the Kogi Government joined forces with other State Governments across the nation to pursue the matter and ultimately prevailed.
