A 68-year-old man’s penis developed gangrene owing to the sex ring he wore for a full day, so doctors had to amputate a portion of it.The American patient was treated by doctors who had to remove layers of dead tissue from the horrifying instance. However, it turned out that the tip had to be removed because it couldn’t be salvaged. But the medic rebuilt sections of the man’s penis using part of his thigh—a seemingly first for its sort.
The anonymous patient informed the urology department doctors at the University of California that he had worn the ring, which increases erection by retaining blood in the genitalia for approximately twenty-four hours. He had to use pliers to pry it off his engorged member because he was unable to remove it by hand.
Surprisingly, though, he didn’t seek medical attention until a week later when he started having urination issues. According to medical professionals who documented the procedure in the journal Urology Case Reports, the man’s penis was unnaturally purple at the time of admission, and there were yellow spots where the skin had blistered. After having a catheter placed to help him urinate, the homeless guy was first released to a nursing home due to what appeared to be a minor injury from his ill-advised sexual experience. But when he came back two weeks later, his entire penis had turned gangrenous and black.
Rebuilding
Medics meticulously removed the dead tissue layer by layer with scalpels and surgical scissors until they reached the deep, inner core of the member, where they discovered living, healthy tissue. They discovered, though, that saving the glans—the medical term for the penis’ head—was not an option.
So they took it out completely. After that, doctors wrapped the peeled penis to let it heal. The man recovered for a week, during which time doctors removed dead tissue and performed another inspection before focussing on penile rebuilding. An 8 by 13 cm skin patch was taken from his right thigh and transplanted onto the patient’s peeling penis core.
