Microwaves are useful for quick dinners and heating leftovers, but some foods do not work well with them. Certain meals should be avoided since they cause uneven heating and spoil textures.
Here are five items to avoid placing in the microwave:
Frozen Meat
While microwaves have a “defrost” mode, attempting to fully cook frozen meat in the microwave might produce tough, dry, and inconsistent results. Microwaves heat from the outside in, thus the outer pieces may get leathery before the middle is fully cooked. If you wish to cook frozen meat, let it thaw overnight in the fridge or defrost it briefly in the microwave before completing it in the oven, skillet, or grill.
Chilli peppers
Capsaicin, the ingredient that gives chilli peppers their intense flavour, is released into the air when they are microwaved. When you open the door, you may be hit with odours that irritate your eyes and throat. If you need to heat chilli peppers, do it on the stove, where you can control the heat.
Frozen fruits
Microwaving frozen fruits may appear to be easy, but it can alter their taste and texture, as well as deplete them of important nutrients. Microwaved fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries, can become mushy. Instead, allow them thaw at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Hard-boiled Eggs
Hard-boiled eggs and microwaves do not mix. Microwaving a hard-boiled egg, especially with the shell still on, can cause pressure to build up, potentially leading to an explosion. Hard-boiled eggs can still explode without the shell. They are best enjoyed cold or gently warmed on the burner.
Breast milk
Microwaving breast milk is not advisable. It can cause hot areas that burn your baby’s tongue and deplete some of the milk’s nutrition. To warm breast milk more safely and gently, place the bottle in a dish of warm water or use a bottle warmer.
