The Methodist Church of Nigeria (1842)
The Methodist Church is one of Nigeria’s first Christian churches. It was founded in 1842 by British Wesleyan missionaries, led by Thomas Birch Freeman. They began work in Badagry, Lagos.

The Church Missionary Society (CMS), Anglican Church (1842)
The Church Missionary Society, generally known as the Anglican Church, was established in 1842. British missionaries, notably Samuel Ajayi Crowther, began their ministry in Badagry.
Crowther, a former slave, became Africa’s first Anglican bishop. He translated the Bible into Yoruba, allowing Nigerians to better understand Christianity. The Anglican Church established numerous schools that influenced education in Nigeria. These schools shaped the moral and intellectual development of the country.
The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (1846)
The Presbyterian Church was founded in 1846 by Scottish missionaries, led by Reverend Hope Waddell. They started their journey in Calabar, southeastern Nigeria.
The church’s mission was not just to preach Christianity, but also to improve people’s lives. They established schools and hospitals to assist the local community thrive. The church’s work in education and healthcare has had a long-term impact, particularly in southeastern Nigeria.
