The Cathedral of Treviso, in northern Italy, is home to a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Titian titled Malchiostro Annunciation, which was finished in 1520.

The Historical Context
Broccardo Malchiostro, the secretary of the bishop and humanist Bernardo de’ Rossi, commissioned the Malchiostro Chapel, which is situated close to the sacristy and to the left of the high altar in the Cathedral of Treviso.
It was designed by Tullio of Antonio Lombardo, finished in 1519, and then painted with frescoes by Il Pordenone until 1520. Around 1523, after the ornamentation was finished, Titian painted this Annunciation, possibly with the aid of Paris Bordone.
It’s possible that the donor’s face was painted over after 1526. This piece served as inspiration for Lorenzo Lotto’s Recanati Annunciation.
The Annunciation is shown in the painting in a church with an a chessboard floor. Titian brought the Madonna into the forefront with the angel behind, being pulled towards Mary by the heavenly light behind him, as opposed to painting the angel on the left and Mary on the right as normal. The donor is positioned away from the viewer in the center, kneeling.
